According to statistics released by Chicago police, the crime rate in Chicago has dropped by 30% when comparing to the April month of last year.
This is because of the lockdown that people are in due to COVID-19. Even though the overall crime rate has decreased, there has been an increase of 6.7% because of 207 shooting cases where there were 194 shooting cases last year.
The murder number has been decreased from 61 to 56 which is about 8.9%.
Till now there have been 625 shootings and 154 murders in Chicago resulting in climbs of around 16 percent and 8 percent, respectively, over the same duration last year.
The police department has said that their focus was only on making people stay home this April and they have made six citations and 17 arrests that included people who disobeyed the order and came out of their home.
Around 436 cases of the coronavirus have been reported which included 415 policemen, as said by the police and three officers lost their lives because of this coronavirus.
Covid-19 or the coronavirus has made people stay indoors more than any time of the usual holidays. During this period, crime rates have also been decreasing to a certain level.
Not only in Chicago but also in many other countries, we could see how the crime rates are falling down. Arrests are made mostly when people do not follow the order to stay at home and stay safe from the virus.
Chicago is one of the most violent cities in America has seen a 30% drop in crime when compared to last year. Even though the deadly virus is making people’s life hard, this is one good aspect that we can look into.
