During World War II, a bear named Wojtek was officially enlisted in the Polish Army and helped move ammunition.

Wojtek was adopted as a cub by Polish II Corps soldiers and was eventually enlisted officially as a private, complete with his own paybook, rank, and serial number. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, he helped move heavy crates of artillery shells. After the war, he lived in Edinburgh Zoo until his death in 1963.
