A 2020 American action thriller, Extraction is based on the graphic novel Ciudad. The movie revolves around Tyler Rake, a black market mercenary and former Special Air Service Regiment soldier who risks and ‘almost’ loses his life in order to rescue Ovi Mahajan Junior who is held for ransom in Dhaka.
The war between India’s biggest drug lord Ovi Mahajan Sr. and Amir Asif, Bangladesh’s biggest drug lord traps Tyler and Ovi Junior.
With Bangladesh’s police under Amir’s control, the entire capital under lockdown, and a ten million dollar ransom on Ovi Junior’s head; the duo risk getting killed at each and every corner.
Having lost his son to lymphoma, Tyler is determined to not leave Ovi behind. Towards the end, an extremely wounded Tyler continues to cover the extraction with the sole aim of letting the innocent boy get another chance at life.
He instructs Ovi to head for the awaiting helicopter and continues to fire with full intentions to follow him. But alas, he’s shot in the neck and falls not the river. Ovi and Khan safely leave for Mumbai.
Eight months later, Asif is killed by Khan in a restaurant. Ovi jumps into his school’s swimming pool and as he surfaces, he sees a white man watching over him.
That’s where the movie ends. The main question in the minds of the audience is that if that white man, in any case, could have been Tyler Rake. This leaves the fans in a doubt, a hope that they might see their hero again. This alternate ending gives a spook to Tyler Rake’s fate.
From the sounds of it, Tyler is dead until Netflix decides that Extraction needs a sequel, then we know who that white gentleman was.
