Annie Edson Taylor made history on October 24, 1901, when she went over Niagara Falls in a custom-made barrel. She survived the stunt but emerged bloodied and concussed. Despite her hopes of fame and fortune, she died in poverty 20 years later, having earned little from her death-defying feat.
