Percy Spencer was working with a magnetron at Raytheon when he noticed the chocolate bar in his pocket had melted. This led him to experiment with microwaves for cooking, resulting in the invention of the microwave oven. The first commercial microwave was released in 1947 and was the size of a refrigerator.
