A striking fact that the ‘ The Walking Dead ‘ universe has in common is the fact of showing zombies on all sides but never calling them that way. We have undead, non-living, walkers, but not zombies. That word is not part of the survivors’ vocabulary. And the new spin-off ‘ TWD: World Beyond ‘ – which already has a new trailer – has also made no exception.
In this new story where the protagonists are young people born and raised already in the zombie apocalypse, their stage partners have been baptized as ‘Empties’, which we will call ‘ Empty ‘. It has been showrunner Matt Negrete who has explained why Walkers have been renamed in this way during the series panel held at Comic-Con @ Home.
When a fan inquired Negrete regarding the expansion, he told, “It’s funny, when Scott [Gimple] and I were working on the pilot and talking about the show in general, there was always that question of ‘What do you call the Walkers in this corner of the universe? ‘I started to think of something that Robert Kirkman had put in one of the comics. There was a cast [Jesus] who also used this phrase on the show and I loved the term. It was’ Empties’. “
“It also felt thematically relevant to the show, because Iris [Bennett, played by Aliyah Royale] in the pilot is dreaming that she is dead because she essentially feels empty inside, and so I felt there was a parallel,” he added.
The spin-off will debut on the same day as the premiere of what was to be the end-of-season episode of ‘The Walking Dead’ that could not be released last April. That is next October 4 at AMC. And we say that “it was going to be the end” because since there will be no new installment in 2021, the mother series will give us six extra episodes from the tenth season.
