Outer Banks is about a teenager who names his three best friends to go on a hunt to find out a legendary treasure that was connected to his father’s disappearance. The series got premiered on April 15th, 2020 with a total of 10 episodes. The show has been constantly on a spot in the list of Netflix’s Top 10 most popular list.
The series offers the illusion of being in a beach gateway and an escape from the upcoming summer. It has two groups- The working-class Pogues and the affluent kooks during the time of summer in the region of North Carolina, famously called The Outer Banks. But aren’t you curious about the actual spot where it was filmed? Yes, the show was not actually filmed in North Carolina.
The Show was set to be filmed in Outer Banks which is a 200 mile-long bend of the barrier islands, which are off the coast of South-eastern Virginia and North Carolina. But it turns out that it was actually shot one state south in Charleston, South Carolina.
The reason why it couldn’t get filmed in its actual location.
There is a political reason behind this problem. Co-Creator of the show, Jonas Pate wanted it to be shot in North Carolina but Netflix opted not to do that, even though the place had already been scouted for shooting locations, due to the state’s anti-LGBTQ House Bill 2 Legislation.
The bill states that transgender people must use bathrooms that match the sex that they have been assigned at birth. Parts of the bill had been repealed, yet local jurisdictions had been barred from passing any such laws until 2020. Pate, later on, gave a statement saying he supports Netflix’s decision.
Despite everything, the creators of the show admit that its geography is slightly off.
If you think that you will be seeing a completely accurate portrayal of the region, you’re wrong. On talking with a local surfer from the area, Esquire got a reply that he found an issue with the Pogues taking the ferry to Chapel Hill which, in fact, is a landlocked area.
The show shot a lighthouse that was not even from their area. There are also some errors regarding homes and vegetation. In south, there are a lot more palm trees. But there aren’t that many in the Outer Banks.
Even though some looked similar, it seems very clear to those who actually live in those areas.
